Quick Checklist Before Your First Class

Here's what we recommend you have sorted before you walk into a dance studio for the first time.

Choose Your Style

Bachata's slower rhythm works well for absolute beginners. Salsa has more complex footwork but very learnable patterns. Decide which appeals to you first.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

You don't need special dance clothes for your first class. Anything you can move in works fine. Soft-soled shoes are better than trainers.

Ask About Class Structure

Good beginner classes spend time on basics, not advanced moves. Check if they teach solo steps first before partner work.

Expect to Feel Awkward at First

Everyone feels clumsy in their first few classes. That's completely normal. Most people find their rhythm improves quickly once the steps become familiar.

Connect With Other Beginners

Classes for mature adults often have a welcoming atmosphere. Don't hesitate to chat with classmates — you'll all be learning together.

Give It Three Classes

First class feels strange. By the third, your body starts remembering patterns. Stick with it long enough to actually enjoy it.
